The Hungarian Prime Minister said that negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union are “out of date” and proposed a “substitute” for EU membership.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban sent a letter to the Hungarian community in Ukraine, appealing to him to support the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. This was reported on Tuesday, December 12, by hvg.hu.
In his response to the Hungarians of Transcarpathia, Orban said his government “will do everything in its power to protect the rights of the Hungarian community in Ukraine.” At the same time, he emphasized that the European Commission has not properly prepared the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the EU, so now is not the time to start negotiations.
“We will therefore propose that the European Union does not aim at legally complicated membership, but at a strategic partnership with Ukraine,” Orban said.
He also assured that Hungary will continue to work to ensure that the Hungarian community in Ukraine “can live in a peaceful, stable developing country.”
Let’s recall that a few days ago the Hungarian communities of Transcarpathia called on Orban to support Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
At the same time, on December 12, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that Ukraine received the first signal from Hungary, indicating a “window of opportunity” for our country at the EU summit on December 14-15.
