He announced this at his inaugural speech to parliament.
Tusk called on Poland’s divided political class to unite, saying it could not afford divisions while Russia waged an aggressive war across the border, many feared conflicts could spread if Moscow were to win.
The task of Poland, the task of the new government, but the task of all of us is to loudly and decisively demand from the entire Western community the full determination to help Ukraine in this war. I will do this from day one.
Tusk expressed his outrage that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has to constantly urge world leaders to continue supporting Kyiv’s fight in a war that has killed or maimed tens of thousands of Ukrainians.
I can no longer listen to some European politicians and politicians from other Western countries who say that they are tired of the situation in Ukraine.
Tusk noted that he will soon travel to Brussels, where he will put his own words into practice and seek increased aid to Ukraine from leading democracies.
Other quotes from the speech of the new Polish Prime Minister:
Today we see President Zelensky trying to convince the world again what the game is about: that Russia’s attack on Ukraine is an attack on us all. We will, and I count on the cooperation of all political forces, loudly and decisively demand the full mobilization of the free world to help Ukraine in this war.
I can no longer listen to politicians (from Western countries) who say that they are tired of the situation in Ukraine. They are tired… They say this to Zelensky’s face, that they have no strength, they are exhausted. The task of Poland, the new government, and all of us is to loudly and firmly demand from the Western community the determination to help Ukraine. I will do this from day one.
Helping our ally, brother, friend Ukraine is actually not that difficult. Full Polish participation is needed, no one should teach us solidarity at the elementary level. At the same time, we will be precise and, if necessary, tough in defending Poland’s interests with every neighbor who wants to build peace with us.
We must remember what the war is about. That Ukrainians are fighting for something very important, that their battle began on the Maidan, they are fighting to join the West. They want Ukraine to be a democratic, rule-of-law state like Western countries. And they are fighting for it now.
On December 11, the Polish Sejm elected Tusk as the new head of government.
In October, the leaders of the Civic Coalition, Third Way and the Left officially announced their readiness to create a coalition and form a government. They also named Donald Tusk as a candidate for prime minister. Thus, a change of power occurred in Poland, despite the fact that the Law and Justice party, which has led the country since 2014, nominally won the elections.
Leaders of opposition parties appealed to President Andrzej Duda not to delay the appointment of the first meeting of the cabinet, to pay attention to who has the majority of mandates, and to entrust the formation of a government to the opposition, not the Law and Justice party.
