The American and Ukrainian militaries are looking for a new war plan. This comes against the backdrop of limited achievements of the counteroffensive and declining support for Ukraine in the US Congress. This was reported by the American newspaper The New York Times, citing officials from the States and Ukraine.
It is noted that Washington insists on a conservative strategy. The United States proposes to gain a foothold in the retained territory, increase military supplies, strengthen the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and also develop the production of its own weapons throughout the year. The Americans want Ukraine to be able to pose a real threat to Russia, which would consider participating in meaningful negotiations in late 2024 or 2025.
However, according to the NYT, Ukraine wants to conduct offensive actions – to go on the offensive either from the ground or by delivering long-range strikes, as was the case in Crimea. Kyiv is also considering a strategy to disable Russian defense factories and railways on the territory of the aggressor country. Top officials from Washington allegedly said that some new ideas from Ukraine were open.
The United States noted that without a new strategy and additional funding, Ukraine could lose the war. Biden noted that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is counting on a decrease in US support. So far, some Republicans have opposed any further aid to Ukraine, while others are demanding a new strategy before voting on any additional funds.
Let us recall that on December 11, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky began a visit to the United States, where he met with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Brown at the US National Defense University. The meeting participants discussed challenges to global security, developments at the front and further Ukrainian-American cooperation in the field of defense.
