This year’s award winners are the late Iranian activist Mahsa Amini and the Iranian Women, Life, Freedom movement. Mahsa Amini was represented by her lawyer because the girl’s family was not allowed to travel to Strasbourg.
Today, December 12, the European Parliament in Strasbourg hosted the awarding ceremony of the Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. This year’s award winners include the late Iranian activist Mahsa Amini and the Iranian Movement Woman, life, freedom, reports Ukrinform.
“This year’s prize is a tribute to all the brave and defiant women, men and young people in Iran who, despite growing pressure, continue to fight for change,” said Roberta Mezolla, head of the European Parliament.
It is reported that the Iranian authorities forbade Mahsa Amini’s relatives to go to Strasbourg, so the family was represented by the lawyer Saleh Nikbakht, who defended the girl.
“Her name became a secret code that meant freedom for all Iranians, not just women, for millions of Iranian prisoners of the regime,” Nikbakht said.
The award was also presented to representatives of Iran Freedom movementswho were forced to leave their country to continue the fight for truth and justice.
“They chose to fight to let the world know that women in Iran have not been free for the past 44 years and have been denied basic human rights,” the lawyer emphasized.
It will be remembered that last year, the 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini lost consciousness after being arrested by the moral police and died three days later. The girl was detained for violating the rules of wearing a hijab.
