The Hungarian Foreign Minister believes that the EC has not carried out preparatory work “that would guarantee that Ukraine will conduct accession negotiations on a mutually beneficial basis.”
The European Commission has almost no idea what effect Ukraine’s EU membership will have on the entire community. This was said by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó in a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba.
According to him, during the negotiations they discussed the ambitions of European integration of Ukraine.
“I told my colleague that for us this is not a tactical issue, but rather a significant historical decision for the future of the entire European Union. A proposal for a solution has not yet been prepared, and the European Commission has almost no idea what effect Ukraine’s membership in the EU will have on the whole community,” said Szijjarto.
He believes that the European Commission has not carried out preparatory work “that would guarantee that Ukraine will conduct accession negotiations on a mutually beneficial basis.”
“Of course, we also talked about the law about minorities, and I told my colleague that Hungary expects a return to the conditions of 2015. However, there is no doubt that we both remain committed to the further development of bilateral relations,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister said.
Let us remind you that Kuleba said that he and Szijjarto had a very long conversation. The ministers discussed the future decision of the European Council on the opening of negotiations on the membership of Ukraine in the EU.
Earlier, he said that the possible refusal of the European Union to start negotiations with Ukraine due to Hungary’s position will have “catastrophic consequences”, but it will not stop the EU enlargement process – our country will still be a member of the bloc.
