Israel has been conducting airstrikes and a ground offensive in Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas since the group’s October 7 attack.
US President Joe Biden said that public opinion could change regarding support for Israel in its war against Hamas. Bloomberg wrote this on Monday, December 11, citing a statement by the American leader at a reception on the occasion of Hanukkah at the White House.
As the publication explained, the head of the White House is trying to balance his support for the country with pressure on it to limit civilian casualties in Gaza.
“We will continue to provide military aid until they get rid of Hamas. But we have to be careful. They have to be careful. Public opinion around the world can change overnight – we can’t let that happen,” Biden said.
At the same time, he said his support for Israel was “unwavering” and condemned the rising tide of anti-Semitism.
“I also recognize your pain in silence and fear for your safety because the rise of anti-Semitism in the United States and around the world is sickening,” Biden said.
Top US officials such as Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin have raised public warnings in recent weeks, and the White House on Monday expressed concern over a report that Israel used white phosphorus provided of the US during an operation in southern Lebanon.
Earlier it was reported that Israel promised not to attack 150 shelters in the Gaza Strip.
Let’s recall that on December 5 it became known that the Israel Defense Forces were launching the third phase of a ground offensive against Hamas and surrounded the city of Khan Yunis in the south.
