Due to the complex topography below, the Noosphere does not land on the island, but stands nearby, so people and cargo are transported to the station by small boats.
Today, December 11, in the evening, a Ukrainian research icebreaker Noosphere reached the Antarctic station Akademik Vernadsky. The team did it ahead of schedule, the National Antarctic Science Center reports.
“The ship was delivered to Vernadsky somewhat earlier than planned, because thanks to the coordinated work of the Polish and Ukrainian teams, as well as good weather conditions, unloading at the previous location – the Polish Arctovsky station – was completed in a record three days,” the statement said.
The icebreaker had to move more slowly from King George to Galindez (these are the islands where the Polish and Ukrainian bases are located), because the movement was greatly hindered by icebergs.
Because of the complex topography below Noosphere did not go to the island, but stood near, so the men and cargo were brought to the station in small boats, and the crew were glad that they were lucky with the weather: they managed to quickly deliver the participant of the seasonal Ukrainian expedition to the beach.
Researchers are preparing for a busy week, but spirits are high, after waiting eight months for the meeting.
After unloading Noosphere will go to Chile and take Polish polar explorers there: for the third year in a row, a Ukrainian ship, instead of a Russian one, is providing shift changes at the Polish Antarctic station Arctowski.
In Chile Noosphere will wait for another seasonal detachment of scientists and a new group of Ukrainian winterers to take them to the station Academician Vernadsky. Ukrainian research icebreaker Noosphere the third Antarctic period began.
We remind you Noosphere left for Antarctica on November 17th. Ukrainian research icebreaker Noosphere the third Antarctic period began.
This November, a passenger plane landed in Antarctica for the first time.
