The agenda of the upcoming “difficult” meeting of the European Council will include “four specific issues” related to Ukraine, the minister said.
A possible refusal of the European Union to start negotiations with Ukraine because of Hungary’s position will have “catastrophic consequences”, but will not stop the process of EU expansion – our country will still be a member of the bloc. Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said this on Monday, December 11.
“I came here with a clear message of Ukraine’s readiness to do its homework to start accession negotiations and move towards EU membership. We also hope that the European Union will make a decision to appreciate the efforts made by Ukraine and give my country the opportunity to start accession negotiations,” the minister said in Brussels before the start of a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, in which he will also take part.
According to Kuleb, the agenda of the upcoming “difficult” meeting of the European Council on December 14-15 will include “four specific issues” related to Ukraine:
-
at the start of accession negotiations
-
on the adoption of a mechanism to ensure the financial stability of Ukraine
-
on continuing funding for the European Peace Fund
-
with the introduction of the 12th package of sanctions.
Kuleba was asked what the consequences might be if the EU is not united on these issues.
“I think the stakes are very high for both Ukraine and the European Union. For the people of Ukraine it will be a very demotivating decision, but for the European Union it will also be a signal to stop the escalation.. .I have no doubt that the enlargement process will continue “Ukraine will become a member of the EU,” said Kuleba.
As for Hungary, Kuleba expressed disagreement with such actions, since Ukraine changed the law on the education and use of the language of national minorities, which was previously requested by Budapest. He also rejected accusations that Ukraine is corrupt.
“We know where this narrative comes from; it is a catchphrase that is not supported by facts,” the minister said.
Let’s recall that on November 8, the European Commission published its annual report on EU enlargement, in which it recommended that the European Council begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
President Vladimir Zelensky said Ukraine expects a political decision from the European Council in December. But Hungary intends to block the EU’s decision.
