The development marks the start of a “new, focused effort” by Britain, Norway and other allies to strengthen Ukraine’s long-term maritime capabilities.
Britain and Norway lead a new maritime coalition to help Ukraine. The new association of countries will provide ships and other vehicles to the Ukrainian defense forces for combat operations at sea. This was reported by the press service of the British Ministry of Defense on Sunday, December 10.
The maritime coalition will work closely with the Ukrainian Navy and the Ministry of Defense to “rapidly build up naval forces in the Black Sea, continue to build up Ukrainian marines and river patrol ships to protect coastal and inland waterways .”
As British Defense Minister Grant Shapps said, as part of the coalition, Ukraine will receive two mine-sweeping ships of the Royal Navy.
“These minesweepers will provide Ukraine with vital capabilities that will help save lives at sea and open important export routes that have been severely limited since the beginning of Putin’s illegal absolute invasion,” the minister said. .
It is known that the initiative will be part of a “series of new coalitions” formed among NATO members to ensure long-term military support for Ukraine.
The UK has allocated a winter humanitarian aid package of £29 million for Ukraine and allocated a further £7.75 million to boost support for the most vulnerable.
British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said the government would support British defense companies “helping countries like Ukraine” because it was in London’s interests.
