The Ukrainian department said that “any election in Russia has nothing to do with democracy.”
The plans of the ruling regime of the Russian Federation to hold elections for its president in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine are illegal and void. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported this on Saturday, December 9.
“The holding of Russian elections on the territories of Ukraine grossly violates the Constitution and laws of Ukraine, the norms and principles of international law, especially the UN Charter. Such an election process, like any other similar propaganda proposals in the past, will be illegal and insignificant,” the message said.
The department states that the inclusion of votes received in the temporarily occupied territories will call into question the legitimacy of the entire results of the Russian presidential election.
The Ministry called on:
-
the international community will strongly condemn the intention of a terrorist country to hold elections in the temporarily occupied territories;
-
impose sanctions on those involved in the organization and conduct of elections;
-
foreign states do not send their own citizens as pseudo-election observers. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that criminal liability is provided for those who participated.
“Any election in Russia has nothing to do with democracy. They only serve as a tool to keep the Russian regime in power,” the Ukrainian department emphasized.
Let us recall that the Federation Council of the Russian Federation adopted a resolution calling for presidential elections in Russia.
In addition, Russian leader Vladimir Putin made a “spontaneous decision” to announce his intention to run in the Russian presidential election in March 2024.
