Regular attacks by the occupiers on the area near Zmeinoye, near which the Ukrainian Armed Forces shot down an enemy Su-24M bomber on December 5, may be associated with the Kremlin’s attempts to demonstrate force in the Black Sea region. Apparently, the Russian plane was “grounded” by a Ukrainian surface-to-air missile from an air defense system over the northwestern part of the Black Sea in the area of the island. The crew most likely died. The British Ministry of Defense reported this on the social network X.
Since the summer of 2023, Russia has continued to conduct high-risk strike operations with a crew on the island, the British emphasized and added that the Russians are attacking Zmeiny because it “has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance.”
Foreign intelligence believes that in this way the Russians want to demonstrate that they can project power in the Black Sea.
The department also added that air defense continues to seriously limit the effectiveness of tactical air operations near Zmeinoye.
Let us recall that back in the summer, the Ukrainian Defense Forces stated that Russia, by shelling Snake Island in the Black Sea, is trying to demonstrate that it still reigns in the maritime area.
