Despite the closure of border checkpoints between Finland and the Russian Federation, “large groups of migrants from third countries” are still arriving.
The European Union’s border service Frontex has sent its workers to reinforce the Finnish border with Russia after the Finnish authorities decided to temporarily close all checkpoints due to the influx of migrants. AFP wrote this on Thursday, December 7, with reference to Frontex representative Piotr Switalski.
As Switalski pointed out, there are 55 EU Border Protection Agency officers in Finland, “most of whom are border guard officers who carry out surveillance.”
He added that they will remain there as long as “necessary.” And their number in the region can increase if circumstances require it.
“We can be longer or shorter, depending on the need. We know that transfer pressure is one of the tools that the Kremlin uses, so we can expect it to continue,” the spokesman added.
As you know, on November 16, Finland decided to stop the work of four of the nine border checkpoints at Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa, Imatra and Nirala, and from November 18 they are closed to traffic.
The EU supported Finland’s decision to close the border with the Russian Federation
