Deputy Foreign Secretary Leo Docherty told the House of Commons that sanctions had been imposed against two people from the Star Blizzard hacker group, one of them a serving FSB officer. In addition, Russian Ambassador Andrei Kelin was summoned to the British Foreign Office, the BBC reported.
The group is accused of carrying out hundreds of targeted hacking attacks on British politicians, civil servants, think tank workers, journalists, academics and other public figures.
Docherty said the Russian FSB gained access to private conversations of British officials.
According to him, a “huge amount of data” has been collected – since 2015, a hacker group associated with the FSB has been selectively collecting it through phishing. The targets were parliamentarians, civil servants, and journalists.
