It will affect the sphere of air defense systems, repair and technical support and the manufacture of critical weapons.
The US Department of Defense, for example, provided Ukraine with technical data for production as part of the FrankenSAM project. We are talking about creating hybrid air defense systems based on Western and Soviet weapons.
It is assumed that the mixed system will combine Western-caliber missiles with Soviet-style launchers and radars. In particular, we are talking about the use of Buk air defense missile launchers and Sea Sparrow missiles. Another option is Soviet-era radars and Sidewinder missiles, as The New York Times wrote about back in October.
The agreement to accelerate joint weapons production and data sharing between the United States and Ukraine states that the Pentagon and industry partners have provided technical data to Ukraine to begin production of certain FrankenSAM projects aimed at modernizing Ukraine’s aging air defense systems by integrating certain Western munitions.
Parallel production of these systems in Ukraine and the United States will speed up deployment and allow Ukraine to make a significant contribution to support its air defense systems.
These initial results will not only expand U.S.-Ukraine cooperation and provide Ukraine with the capabilities it needs to succeed on the battlefield in the short term, but will also support Ukraine’s long-term economic recovery and defense, the White House said.
