However, he emphasized that this takes time, because now there is a problem – the production of the arms industry cannot keep up with the emerging needs.
Pistorius said this on the evening of Tuesday, December 5, on the ZDF TV program Heute Journal.
The minister believes that the German defense industry is increasing capacity “wherever it can,” but this will take time.
According to him, the defense industry cannot keep up with demand. This applies to both ammunition and air defense systems.
The head of the German Ministry of Defense also added that he always knew that the figure of 1 million ammunition from the EU in a year was unlikely to be achieved.
He noted that the main problem is not political will or funding, but that it is necessary to increase production that was reduced in “peacetime.”
As an example, Pistorius cited the production of ammunition for Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled guns, which Germany had to restore. According to him, although this was done relatively quickly, it still took six months.
The minister also recalled that Germany is the second largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine after the United States.
“We are delivering everything we can,” Pistorius assured.
