The diplomat believes that Ukraine is still very far from EU membership and it will be possible to talk about the start of negotiations on this issue only after the war.
This is a very serious matter. But under current circumstances, I can’t imagine it. I myself am interested in how Ursula von der Leyen will justify the proposal for membership or the opening of negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and answer the question of how we can begin negotiations with a country in a state of military conflict,” said the head of the Slovak Foreign Ministry.
He believes that there should be a prospect of future membership for Ukraine, but with all the rules, as for all other Eastern Partnership countries, such as Moldova and Georgia, or the Western Balkans.
Blanar added that Slovakia is ready to support Ukraine on its way to the EU, but “must fully meet all the criteria.”
At the same time, the minister once again recalled the words of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico that Ukraine is “totally corrupt” and said that he “has grounds to say so.”
Let us remind you that the head of Hungary, Viktor Orban, also has a tough anti-Ukrainian position, and without the unanimity of the EU, it will be almost impossible to make a decision on starting negotiations on Ukraine’s accession.
The decision to begin formal negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the EU may be made at the EU leaders’ summit on December 14-15.
Everyone is persuading Orban – now Macron is calling him.
