The European Commissioner said the idea of returning the permits requested by Polish carriers was unacceptable, and accused the Polish government of “washing its hands.”
The European Commission said it supports the so-called transport visa-free regime between Ukraine and the European Union, despite the demands of Polish carriers. European Commissioner for Transport Adina Velyan said this after an EU Council meeting at the level of infrastructure and transport ministers on Monday, December 4, Radio Liberty reports.
Velyan also promised to defend this agreement.
“This ping-pong between Ukraine and the European Commission is unfair. Meanwhile, people are suffering at the border, and our external borders of the European Union are becoming hostages. Therefore, the idea of returning permits are unacceptable, because it is for this purpose that we refuse permits,” said the European Commissioner.
He emphasized that allowing transactions under different numbers and with different numbers of authorizations in the EU is not viable.
Velyan emphasized that it is necessary to discuss the problems related to this agreement only after the critical border situation is resolved. He also criticized the Polish government, while pointing out that the country is in the process of forming a new majority after the election.
“I consider it unacceptable for the government to wash its hands of Poland, saying that this is a matter between the local authorities and the European Commission, and ultimately Ukraine. We, as the central government, are has nothing to do with it – our hands are tied. I don’t think this is an acceptable explanation,” the commissioner added.
He said he hopes to work with the next Polish government to resolve the border problem as soon as possible.
We remind you that after a meeting of the EU Transport Council, the representative of Poland said that his country, as well as Hungary and Slovakia, expected that the agreement would be revised and the execution of permits for Ukraine would be resumed.
Meanwhile, the representative of Ukraine said that Kyiv has completed all measures to unblock the border with Poland, which was agreed with the European Commission and Warsaw. They also noted that there are already changes in the issue of the border blockade, as the Ugrinov-Dolgobychev checkpoint has been opened.
