The White House and the US State Department have called on Congress to act as quickly as possible, as previous funding for aid to Ukraine has almost been exhausted.
The United States cannot provide Ukraine with new weapons unless Congress provides funding for such supplies. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said this in a briefing on Monday, December 4.
He recalled that when the United States transfers weapons from stockpiles to Ukraine as part of a “reduction package,” authorities take money appropriated by Congress and buy new weapons to replace the ones transferred.
“When we run out of money to buy weapons to replace donations, we cannot continue to give weapons to Ukraine… We need Congress to support funding in a bipartisan way. Because there is no way out with simple arithmetic when there is no funding to provide arms to Ukraine, we cannot continue to provide arms to Ukraine,” added the advisor to the US President.
According to him, now everything depends on the Congress. Congress must decide whether to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight for independence, or whether “Congress will ignore the lessons we’ve learned from history and let Putin win.”
He recalled that the United States was running out of money and “almost running out of time.” Therefore, Sullivan called on Congress to approve Biden’s funding request, which would strengthen US national security and help Ukraine fight Russian aggression.
At the same time, he expressed confidence that when the bill is put to a vote, there will be voices that support it.
“The good news is that very strong majorities of both Democrats and Republicans support this relief, so there’s no reason why it shouldn’t come to a vote in the House and Senate. And if it does come to a vote, we’ll see . the bipartisan support for providing this funding is overwhelming,” he added.
A similar statement was made by the US State Department. Its leader, Antony Blinken, called on the US Congress to act as quickly as possible to pass a new aid package to Ukraine. US State Department Speaker Matthew Miller said this in a briefing.
“We are very concerned that funding is running out,” said a US foreign policy official.
He emphasized that the United States Administration relies on PDA fund balances for Presidential appropriations, which are more than 97% depleted.
Miller noted that the secretary of state is joining the president and other members of the administration in calling on Congress to act quickly.
It was previously reported that the White House sent an urgent letter to the US Congress regarding aid to Ukraine.
