Following Vice President Kamala Harris’ remarks yesterday about “devastating suffering” in the Gaza Strip, the Pentagon chief said Israel has a “moral responsibility” to protect civilians.
If you drive them into the arms of the enemy, you will replace tactical victory with strategic defeat, said Lloyd Austin in the West in California.
Calling the Hamas attack on October 7 the deadliest terrorist attack in Israeli history, he stressed that the United States will continue to support its “closest friend in the world.” At the same time, he said that he was personally putting pressure on the Israeli leadership to significantly expand the access of Gazans to humanitarian aid.
I have repeatedly made clear to Israeli leaders that protecting Palestinian civilians in Gaza is both a moral duty and a strategic imperative. And so I have personally urged Israeli leaders to avoid civilian casualties, abandon irresponsible rhetoric, prevent settler violence in the West Bank, and substantially expand access to humanitarian assistance, Lloyd Austin said.
The Pentagon chief’s comments came as Israeli troops on Saturday intensified airstrikes against targets in the southern Gaza Strip, where hundreds of thousands of residents of the northern part of the enclave had found temporary shelter.
Shortly before Austin’s speech, US Vice President Kamala Harris said that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed” and called the scale of Gaza’s suffering “devastating.”
