China has a monopoly on pandas and does not sell them, but rents them, often for hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Experts call this “panda diplomacy.”
Scotland has sent two pandas to China after living at Edinburgh Zoo for 12 years. They are the only pandas in the UK. AP wrote this on Friday, December 1.
Both pandas were moved to the UK in 2011 as part of an international lease.
After unsuccessful breeding attempts – both natural and artificial – the zoo said it has no plans to continue breeding these animals and will focus on protecting endangered species.
“With more than a million species at risk of extinction and our natural world in crisis, Yang Guang and Tian Tian have had an incredible impact on inspiring millions of people to conserve nature,” said David Field, chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.
The giant panda is the unofficial symbol of China. Foreign countries can rent pandas from China for ten years. China uses this tool to establish diplomatic relations. At the end of the lease period, if the contract is extended, the animals must be returned to China.
It will be remembered that in 2020, the world’s oldest giant panda, Xin Xing, died at the zoo in the Chinese city of Chongqing at the age of 38.
