Navalny is in a maximum security colony in the Vladimir region on charges of fraud and extremism.
A new criminal case has been opened against Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, who is in a colony in the Vladimir region. This time, Russian authorities are accusing him of “vandalism.” Under this article, Navalny faces a fine, or forced labor, or arrest for up to three months. It was reported on Friday, December 1, on the politician’s Telegram channel.
According to Navalny, he received a letter from the Investigative Committee of Russia. “I inform you that a criminal case has been opened against you based on a crime under Part 2 of Article 214 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Two stages,” the politician quoted the investigator’s letter.
Navalny noted that he did not know the contents of the article – “and there was nowhere to look.”
“Well, I mean, they actually start a new criminal case against me every three months. There has never been a convicted person, sitting in solitary confinement for more than a year, who has lived such rich social and political life,” Navalny wrote.
According to his associates, this is the 14th criminal case against Alexei Navalny. He was sent to a colony by Russian authorities in February 2021 after he was found guilty of fraud in the Yves Rocher case. Then the politician was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. In March 2022, Navalny was found guilty under the fraud article, and then under the guise of a judge, he was sentenced to 9 years in a maximum security colony (for a combination of crimes).
In August 2023, Alexei Navalny was sentenced by the Moscow City Court to 19 years in prison in a special regime colony on the charge of creating an “extremist organization.”
The First Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction rejected the appeals of Alexei Navalny’s defense against the verdict in the case of an extremist community.
We remind you that Alexei Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison in a special regime colony on the charge of “extremism”.
Earlier, in March 2022, Navalny was found guilty of “fraud” and then “insulting a judge,” and was sentenced to 9 years in a maximum security colony for a combination of “crimes.”
