The Bloc has an association agreement with Ukraine. This was stated on December 1 on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai by the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, who was asked to comment on the call of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, instead of negotiations on Ukraine’s admission to the EU, to begin establishing “strategic partnership” relations with him. Reuters writes about this.
We have an association agreement with Ukraine, which offers many opportunities for close cooperation with Ukraine,” he noted.
According to Michel, in December 2023 there will be “in-depth debates with 27 colleagues” and an assessment will be made of the upcoming decision on the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
As you know, in December at the EU summit the issue of starting accession negotiations between the European Union and Ukraine will have to be resolved, but this decision requires the unanimous approval of all 27 member countries.
Let us recall that on December 1, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Hungary would not veto the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, since the rules do not provide for such a possibility. Budapest proposes not to bring up the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the EU at all at the summit, which will be held on December 14-15.
