An American military tiltrotor V-22 Osprey with eight people on board has crashed into the ocean off the Japanese island of Yakushima. This was reported by Reuters in connection with a statement by the Japanese Coast Guard.
The accident occurred around 14:47 local time (7:47 Kyiv time) on November 29. According to eyewitnesses, when the tiltrotor fell, its left engine was engulfed in flames.
A spokesman for the Japan Coast Guard said the service did not yet have details about the incident. The fate of the people on board is unknown.
In December 2016, a V-22 Osprey made an emergency landing in the ocean off the coast of Okinawa. After that, the Pentagon introduced a temporary ban on the operation of tiltrotors of this type.
In August of this year, an Osprey tiltrotor crashed off the coast of Australia while transporting troops during military exercises, killing three US Marines.
