Ukraine with its values, culture and history is already preparing to join Europe, says the head of EU diplomacy.
Ukraine has a chance to get the status of a candidate in the EU, and the political structure itself can be expanded. This was announced on Sunday, June 12, by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in an interview for the official EU magazine.
At the same time, he did not name possible dates for Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
“Ukraine, with its values, culture and history, is already preparing to join Europe through reforms a day before the Russian invasion. Ten years ago in Thessaloniki, we promised a European future to the Western “Balkans. Some will succeed, others will not. The same for Ukraine?” said Borrell.
At the same time, he noted that after the war, the EU had to learn to live with Russia, and for this Europe needed to determine a clear plan for contacts with this country.
Borrell also supported French President Emmanuel Macron’s call to “not embarrass Russia.”
“This coexistence is going to be very difficult after what Russia did to Ukraine. It’s aggression, aggression, destruction in Ukraine. We see it all every night on TV and I see it right on the spot. But we still have to try to live together with the Russians on this continent “, he said.
At the same time, he noted that communication channels in Russia have never been closed.
“The Austrian chancellor was in Moscow recently, the African Union chairman will return from Sochi, and two envoys of the UN Secretary General are in Russia today to try to find a solution to the problem of Ukrainian grain exports. We must resume negotiations with Russia. , ”Borrell said.
Earlier, Borrell said Russia’s war against Ukraine could last considerably. At the same time, the aggressiveness of the actions of the Russian Federation will increase.
