Irish writer Paul Lynch, 46, has won the 2023 Booker Prize for Literature. He received an award for his novel Prophet Song. It was announced on Sunday, November 26, on the award website.
Lynch received the £50,000 award at a ceremony in London.
Her novel chronicles a mother of four’s struggle to save her family as Ireland slides into totalitarianism.
The chairman of the jury, Esi Edugan, noted that his new book reflects the social and political anxieties of today.
“From the first knock on the door, A Prophet’s Song shakes us with delight as we follow the harrowing fate of a woman trying to protect her family in Ireland as it descends into totalitarianism. claustrophobia of the seductive Lynch’s world, and we’re haunted by this claustrophobia,” he added.
Paul Lynch said that his novel was influenced by the events in Syria, the refugee problem and the reaction of the West.
“I tried to look at modern unrest. Unrest in Western democracies. The problem of Syria – the explosion of the whole country, the scale of the refugee crisis and the indifference of the West… I want to immerse the reader in this topic. so much that by the end of the book he would not just know, but feel this problem on myself,” he explained.
Paul Lynch became the fifth Irish writer to win the Booker Prize.
He was born in Limerick in 1977, the son of a member of the Irish Coast Guard. He has been working as a writer since 2013, and was previously a film critic for The Sunday Tribune. The writer published four more novels, which received several awards for them: Beyond the Sea, Grace, The Black Snow and Red Sky in Morning. They are not published in Ukrainian.
