Republicans in the US Congress are seeking to tie the approval of foreign military aid to stronger border policies.
The head of the House Intelligence Committee, Republican Mike Turner, said that new American aid to Ukraine and Israel will be difficult to accept before the end of the year.
“I think it will be very difficult to get it done before the end of the year, and the obstacle now is the White House’s policy toward the southern border,” Turner said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Bloomberg wrote.
Turner predicted that “Congress will require legislative changes to ensure that the border returns to its original state.” That could include limiting the entry of asylum seekers to the Mexican border and other measures to protect it, he said.
Congressional Republicans are trying to tie the approval of military aid to Ukraine and Israel to stricter border rules after President Joe Biden signed a stopgap bill that extends funding for the US government until early next year.
Congress returns to work next week, with bills on Israel and Ukraine on the agenda.
We remind you that on November 20, the US Department of Defense announced the provision of additional assistance to Ukraine in the field of security and defense. The next military aid will be the 51st “tranche” of equipment for Ukraine, starting in August 2021.
Earlier, Sky News reported that the United States will provide $100 million in military aid to Ukraine.
