On the day of remembrance for the victims of the Holodomor, the head of the Canadian government called on fellow citizens to learn more about this dark page of history and pledged long-term support for Ukraine.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country will provide support to Ukraine as long as necessary. Trudeau’s press service reported this on Saturday, November 25.
“In 1932 and 1933, the Soviet regime of Joseph Stalin carried out a deliberate famine across Ukraine. The Holodomor – the ‘hunger death’ – was a genocide that led to the starvation of millions of innocent Ukrainians, including children ,” the Canadian Prime Minister said.
He noted that in the face of systematic oppression, the Ukrainian people remained steadfast, and when Ukraine declared its independence nearly six decades later in 1991, Canada was the first Western country to recognize Ukraine.
“Today, as Ukraine continues to defend itself from Russia’s brutal war of occupation, Ukrainians are once again showing a non-hardline, non-destructive spirit. Ukraine will remain free; Ukraine will remain independent; and the Canada will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary,” Trudeau said.
He also called on Canadians on Holodomor Remembrance Day to learn more about this dark part of history and honor the millions of innocent lives lost.
Let’s remember that this week Canada announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, which includes, among other things, 11,000 assault rifles and more than 9 million rounds of ammunition.
It was previously reported that Canada will allocate approximately one billion dollars in military aid to Ukraine. The planned funds will be accumulated until 2026. In the period from 2023 to 2024, Ukraine will receive 816 million Canadian dollars from Canada.
