Taking into account these data, the first five lines were occupied by Tiva (48.6 deaths), Buryatia (36.7), Nenets Autonomous Okrug (30), Altai Republic (26.5) and Transbaikal Territory (26.2).
For comparison, this list is completed by St. Petersburg (2.5) and Moscow (1). That is, for natives of these cities, the likelihood of dying in war is tens of times less than for residents of a number of regions of Siberia and the Far East.
In total, by the end of November 2023, the Russian BBC Service, together with the Mediazona publication and a team of volunteers, managed to establish the names of 37 thousand 686 Russian soldiers who died during the invasion of Ukraine.
The real losses are higher, journalists write, since the publication relies only on open data: media reports, posts on social networks and data on cemeteries.
