US cautious behavior has led to escalation around the world – The Hill

The White House’s cautious approach to arming Ukraine—so as not to provoke Russia and avoid escalating the conflict—ultimately led to the escalation occurring and affecting the entire world.

    .

In The Hill, economist Mark Toth and former military intelligence officer Jonathan Mir write that neither the path nor Xi Jingping, nor Iranian leaders or Hamas are afraid of escalation.

They act generally without regard for the fact that their steps may upset someone important – and gradually the situation in the world flares up. The Yemeni Houthis, acting at the behest of Tehran and, ultimately, Moscow and Beijing, are already attacking American military targets. The US is slowly finding itself at the center of a new world war – and due to indecision, the country’s position is now worse than it could be.

The Kremlin and Tehran would have much less opportunity to inflame the situation in the Middle East if the United States immediately supported Ukraine as decisively as possible. They would not have allowed the Russian-Ukrainian war to turn into a protracted war with the prospect of becoming “eternal” or ending in the defeat of Ukraine. Both of these options strengthen China, which may be more bold in attacking Taiwan.

As a result, it turns out that the path of the minimum possible assistance to Ukraine costs American taxpayers more than if the White House decided to immediately give a serious rebuff to the aggression, the authors of the article write.

The problem is that Washington has not resolved any of these wars and is committed to restoring peace. But Moscow, Beijing or Tehran are stirring up conflicts in order to win against them. They are more persistent, more decisive and less principled; de-escalation is not really in their interests. And in order for them to calm down, you need to give them a proper rebuff. And it’s still not too late to do this, write Tot and Mir.

Supporting Kyiv costs the US 0.33% of GDP. This is such a small figure that if it were a Black Friday discount, such numbers would seem ridiculous. Russians spend more on war – and in the modern world there have not been cases when the side that spent less would win a war.

If the United States still wants to remove Putin and his friends from the “weight of evil,” they must quickly become more decisive. Otherwise, there is a high probability that the traditional New York Thanksgiving Day parade will soon have to be canceled, as was the case during World War II.
