On November 22, the Verkhovna Rada supported the draft Law on the Use of the English Language in Ukraine (No. 9432). 278 people’s deputies voted for the document in the first reading.

People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak said in his social networks that the project provides for the official consolidation of the status of English as one of the languages of international communication in Ukraine, the determination of the categories of positions for which candidates are required to speak English, the standardization of the specifics of the use of English in the work of public authorities, bodies local government, emergency assistance units for the population, when crossing the state border, in the fields of education, transport, and healthcare.
He also noted that the rule on showing English-language films in cinemas in the original language with subtitles in Ukrainian was excluded by the decision of the Committee.
Previously, this norm caused heated discussion in society.
