The Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus have jointly vetoed Estonia’s presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in 2024.
Russia and Belarus vetoed the confirmation of Estonia as the next head of the OSCE in 2024. Estonian media ERR reported this on Tuesday, November 21.
The official representative of the Estonian Foreign Ministry, Bretti Sarapuu, said that the veto was imposed at a meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna.
“Since Estonia is the only candidate from EU countries, we will definitely discuss it with other EU countries,” the Estonian official said.
He also said that next week a meeting of OSCE foreign ministers will be held in the capital of the current OSCE leader of North Macedonia. It is planned to raise this issue again during this meeting.
Let’s recall that the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov wrote an official letter to his Macedonian colleague stating that he will not be able to attend the OSCE meeting due to the closed airspace. Last year, the meeting took place in Poland, where the Russian official also could not fly.
Let’s add, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, Russia needs to be expelled from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe because of its destructive influence.
