Slovak deputies also voted for a program providing for the termination of state military assistance to Ukraine. This program should slowly reduce the budget deficit and introduce a new bank tax. This was reported by Reuters.
The parliamentary opposition voted against the program. Opponents of Fico’s policies cited the new prime minister’s attacks on independent media and the dismissal of top police officials who were investigating members of the new ruling coalition for bribery.
As is known, even before the elections in Slovakia, Fico promised, if he won, to stop official military assistance to Ukraine, despite the fact that it is fighting the Russian occupiers on the battlefield.
Let us remind you that by the end of the year the European Union must make a decision on revising its budget for 2024-2027, including the allocation of funds to Ukraine. But this requires the consent of all 27 EU member states.
Recently it became known that Hungary and Slovakia opposed the provision of 50 billion euros to Ukraine. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico referred to problems of corruption in Ukraine, while his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban said that “EU support is not working.”
