The immediate accession of Ukraine to NATO has the support of a fairly wide circle of people, but there are also factors that prevent it.
Ukraine can become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance if it wins the war with the Russian Federation. US Senator from the Democratic Party Jeanne Shaheen said this on Saturday, November 18, writes Ukrinform.
“Ukraine’s full membership in NATO is possible only after the cessation of hostilities on the country’s territory,” he said.
“As in the case of the decision about Ukraine’s approach to the EU, we see that NATO is also moving in this direction. As soon as the war stops, Ukraine will have the opportunity to join NATO,” he said.
Shahin explained that there are factors preventing Ukraine from immediately joining the organization.
“First of all, there is a fifth article that would apply if Ukraine were to join NATO now, which raises doubts among many whether now is the right time or not,” said a member of the US Senate.
Also, to join the military-political union, Ukraine will have to carry out some reforms, because “NATO is also an alliance of values,” added Shahin.
As part of the DEEP program, more than 12 thousand Ukrainian military personnel and teachers were trained according to NATO standards.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaia Kallas is “open” ahead of her appointment as NATO Secretary General.
