Since August, the exchange of prisoners of war has been halted. Ukraine is running out of places to keep them.
Since August of this year, Russia has actually cooled down the exchange of prisoners with Ukraine. The representative of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Pyotr Yatsenko, spoke about this in an interview with Current Time.
“In fact, since the summer, Russia has actually frozen exchanges. It’s not happening to the extent that they did before,” he said.
Yatsenko emphasized that Ukraine is ready for the exchange of prisoners, but everything depends on the Russian side. He added that places for holding prisoners of war in Ukraine are running out, so there is a question about expanding their number.
“We know that the conditions in which our defenders are in Russia are significantly worse than the conditions we offer as a European country that adheres to the Third Geneva Convention relating to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, ” he added.
A representative of the Coordination Headquarters stressed that Russia is not interested in the fate of its prisoners, thus delaying the exchange and creating various obstacles. Yatsenko suggested that the aggressor country did not want to bring back the Ukrainian military to carry out propaganda campaigns.
He recalled that several major exchanges took place in May of this year. And the last one was on August 7, then only 22 people were able to return.
It was previously reported that a new camp for holding Russian prisoners of war will be opened in Ukraine in the near future.
