Switzerland is traditionally a neutral country (although after it joined Western sanctions, Russia said it no longer considers it so). It produces and exports quite a lot of weapons, but always with the condition that military goods should not be resold to warring countries.
On Thursday, the Swiss publication NZZ wrote that the Polish company UMO SP resold to Ukraine ammunition produced by the Swiss company SwissP Defense, based in the city of Thun. NZZ referred to the American website Defense One, which wrote that 145 thousand rounds of ammunition for sniper rifles and 500 thousand for assault rifles “could” have gotten into Ukraine this way.
Control of arms exports to Switzerland is carried out by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. It confirmed that a review was underway but declined to comment further until it was completed.
NZZ noted that private buyers such as UMO SP are not required to sign re-export declarations.
AFP also cites an email from the Polish company, which insists that it strictly followed all export procedures and that all its agreements were reviewed by the authorized authorities of Poland and the producing countries.
Switzerland indeed refrained from supplying Ukraine with weapons and ammunition; the most famous case in this regard was Swiss-made shells for the guns of German Leopard 2 tanks. Swiss authorities are checking publications about the supply of Swiss ammunition from Poland to Ukraine
