Yulia’s bone cancer had spread to her knee joint, so a high-level amputation of her leg might have been required. Doctors wanted to preserve her ending, so rotational plastic surgery was needed. The patient’s leg was sewn back to front, removing the middle part of the limb. The successful operation was carried out by doctors from Ivano-Frankivsk, Lvov and Kyiv. This was announced by St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital.
The patient has already returned to Ivano-Frankivsk and continues chemotherapy. When her leg finally heals, Julia will be able to work with a physical therapist and develop her leg. Then she will get prosthetics.
As is known, rotational plasty is an operation in children in whom part of the leg along with the knee is removed due to bone cancer, and the lower part of the limb along with the foot is turned 180 degrees and sewn to the femur – back to front. Then the foot begins to play the role of the knee, and this allows the installation of a functional prosthesis. It is also possible to preserve sensitivity and mobility of the leg.
Let us remind you that in January, Ukrainian military surgeons performed a unique operation – they removed an unexploded VOG grenade from the body of a serviceman. It was removed in the presence of two sappers who insured the safety of medical personnel.
