The failure of Congress to support Biden’s funding request for Ukraine and Israel threatens US national interests.
The ability of the US to support Ukraine is decreasing every week. US Presidential National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said this in a briefing on Monday, November 13, Ukrinform reports.
He noted that this impact will only increase over time if Congress does not quickly approve President Joe Biden’s request, which includes aid to Ukraine and Israel.
According to Sullivan, this situation is already having an impact on Washington’s ability to provide Ukraine with everything it needs, as well as on US national interests.
“The Biden administration sent a request for funding for issues related to Israel, Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific region, as well as the (strengthening – ed.) border. We described in detail everything that is needed us, including for Ukraine, and we still need it “We need it as soon as possible,” said Sullivan.
He emphasized that the government is actively working with Republicans and Democrats in both houses of the US Congress to ensure support for the initiative.
“I’m personally on the phone every day with lawmakers — both Democrats and Republicans — to present their arguments,” Sullivan said.
He noted that both chambers have a strong majority to accept the US President’s request. According to him, “the national interest of the United States suffers serious damage if we cannot provide stable funding for Israel, Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific region and the border.”
Sullivan also warned Congress against leading to a government shutdown that threatens the country after October 17. He noted that such a development could be a “crushing blow” especially for the US military, which defends the US national security interests.
In addition, he said, a potential shutdown would send a signal to the international community “that the United States cannot unite on a bipartisan basis.” This is especially important at a time when the world is experiencing turmoil, including due to the Russian war against Ukraine and Israel’s fight against Hamas terrorists.
We remind you that last week the White House said that the US authorities have used up 96% of all funds allocated to help Ukraine.
Also last week, the Biden administration rejected another proposal from Congress to fund the federal government, which did not include allocating money to help Ukraine and Israel.
