Putin should make it clear that Ukraine will be a member of NATO, regardless of what he might do, the former secretary general believes.
The North Atlantic Alliance should offer Ukraine membership in the organization at the next summit in Washington. This was said on Thursday, November 2, by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in an interview with the Finnish news agency STT.
In his opinion, waiting for the end of a full-scale war would only give Vladimir Putin “an excuse to endlessly continue the war.”
“The sooner we do this, the sooner we end the war. That is, membership first, and then the end of the war, and not the other way around,” said Rasmussen.
He emphasized that he has a practical solution on how to apply NATO’s Article 5 on joint defense to Ukraine.
“I think one model could be that we invite all of Ukraine to become a member of NATO, but as the war continues, Article 5 will only apply to the territory that is now under the control of Kiev, ” he explained.
According to him, such a decision would practically protect all of Western Ukraine from Russian attacks, while simultaneously freeing up Ukrainian forces to fight the Russians in the east.
“In any case I want a frozen conflict, but I want to contribute to the struggle of Ukrainians,” the ex-general secretary emphasized.
Rasmussen added that it is also important that the time between invitation to membership and entry into NATO is as short as possible.
“The alliance should clearly state: Ukraine will be a member of NATO regardless of what Putin does.
NATO countries must be prepared for aggression from Russia. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this on Friday, October 27.
NATO says it has the necessary resources to simultaneously support Israel in its conflict with Hamas, as well as assist Ukraine in its war with the Russian Federation.
