In Spain, more than 200 thousand children were sexually abused by clergy in 90 years.
The Catholic Church in Spain has apologized to victims of sexual abuse committed by clergy. However, he expressed doubts about the scale of the crimes. This was reported by Reuters on Wednesday, November 1, citing the statement of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference.
In particular, the Spanish clergy, after the extraordinary meeting, expressed “pain for the damage caused by some members of the church through sexual abuse, and repeated their request to the victims for forgiveness.”
At the same time, representatives of the church expressed doubts about the accuracy of the commission’s findings, saying that the preliminary investigation indicates a lower number of victims.
The church’s statement came in response to data released by an independent commission on sexual abuse cases. We are talking about more than 200,000 people who were abused by the clergy as children in 1940. More than 8 thousand adults took part in the survey.
An internal church investigation released in June 2023 identified 728 possible abusers and 927 victims since the 1940s.
