As winter approaches, Ukraine, demanding more air defense capabilities to protect its power grids from Russian strikes, has teamed up with the United States to create “hybrid monsters” — retrofitted air defense system, the New York Times reports.
The journalists wrote that the countries were ready to experiment with a “monstrous weapon system.”
American officials call it the FrankenSAM program, which combines modern Western-caliber surface-to-air missiles with converted Soviet-era launchers or radars already in service with Ukrainian troops.
Two versions of this improvised air defense – a combined Soviet Buk launcher and American Sea Sparrow missiles, and a second combined Soviet-era radar and American Sidewinder missiles – have been tested in the past few months at military bases in the United States and should which will be delivered to Ukraine this fall.
The third, the Hawk missile system, combined with Soviet equipment, the media wrote, has already been demonstrated on the battlefield in Ukraine.
The publication says that these hybrid systems “help fill critical gaps in Ukrainian air defense.”
Let’s recall that a few days ago Germany transferred the IRIS-T anti-aircraft air defense system to Ukraine.
It has also been reported that the Ukrainian military has found a way to combine British Storm Shadow and French Scalp cruise missiles with old Soviet aircraft.
