Ukrainian engineers, together with their American colleagues, created a hybrid air defense system. They will enter service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the coming weeks, reports The New York Times.
It was noted that the systems make it possible to launch modern Western-caliber anti-aircraft missiles from modernized Soviet launchers. American officials call this program FrankenSAM.
One option combines Buk launchers and Sea Sparrow missiles, the other combines Soviet radars and Sidewinder missiles. They have been tested at military bases in the United States and will enter service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces this fall.
“FrankenSAMs help fill critical gaps in Ukraine’s air defense,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Policy Laura Cooper. He added that this is the most important task facing Ukraine today.
Let’s recall that a few days ago Germany transferred the IRIS-T anti-aircraft air defense system to Ukraine.
It has also been reported that the Ukrainian military has found a way to combine British Storm Shadow and French Scalp cruise missiles with old Soviet aircraft.
