Russia forces Ukrainian prisoners of war to join its “volunteer formations”. Analysts from the American Institute for the Study of War ISW reported this in a report dated October 27.
It was noted that the Russian authorities were probably forcing Ukrainian prisoners of war to join “volunteer formations” that would fight in Ukraine.
The previous day, Russian media reported that the so-called “volunteer battalion” Bohdan Khmelnytsky “recruited” about 70 Ukrainian prisoners of war from various Russian colonies, began training and, after completing their education, will be deployed to an unspecified section of the front line.
ISW analysts note that forcing prisoners of war to participate in combat is a violation of the Geneva Prisoners of War Convention, which states that “no prisoner of war shall be sent or held in places where he will be exposed to fire in a combat zone,” and cannot be “used in work injurious to health or dangerous.”
