The foundation filed an application with the German prosecutor’s office, since it has the principle of universal jurisdiction – it can investigate crimes committed outside the country and regardless of the citizenship of suspects and victims.
The organization has provided detailed dossiers on Russian criminals and represents the interests of 16 victims and families of the victims.
The Clooneys’ foundation notes that it collects evidence of widespread human rights violations, provides free legal support to victims and “works to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
For now, they are actively investigating, in particular, war crimes in Ukraine.
Since February 24, 2022, a team of international lawyers and investigators working under CFJ’s The Docket program has been collecting evidence and preparing submissions detailing the types of violations committed by the Russian military in Ukraine.
The Dossier program collects information about the criminal actions of Russians. It is led by human rights activist and legal candidate Anna Neistat, who has spent years documenting human rights violations in Chechnya, Syria, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, China and Georgia.
One of the cases was the indiscriminate missile attack by Russian Tu-22 bombers with supersonic Kh-22 missiles on a coastal resort near Odessa, which killed 22 people.
The second case is the shooting of four men in the occupied territory in the Kharkov region in the spring and summer of last year as part of the large-scale practice of the occupying forces of the Russian Federation to commit crimes against humanity.
The third case is a series of executions, acts of torture and sexual violence committed near Kiev in March 2022, when, according to local authorities, 177 civilians were killed.
