The nuclear power plant in the Danube city of Kozloduy operates two Soviet nuclear reactors, which in the future will use American and French nuclear fuel.
Construction of the 7th power unit of Kozloduy NPP has started in Bulgaria. During construction, American technology, which is unique in Europe, will be used. This was reported by Euractiv.
As Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov noted, Bulgaria will use new technology from the American nuclear company Westinghouse, which hopes to enter the EU market through the Bulgarian project.
It is noted that there are only two nuclear power plants in the world that use Westinghouse AP1000 technology: one in China, the second in the USA, and Ukraine has also become interested in American technology.
“The state company responsible for the project will receive 250 million euros. The company will begin negotiations with organizations that will build the 7th power unit of the nuclear power plant. The project’s completion date is 2033,” said Denkov.

The Bulgarian government plans to start preparations for the construction of the 8th reactor of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant using the same AP1000 technology: the construction of two new power units should be simultaneous, and the second one should be completed in two to three year after. the first.
Denkov called the government’s decision one of the most important to be made by the Cabinet of Ministers during its tenure.
He added that the technology chosen by Bulgaria for these reactors allows the power of the reactors to be changed in a very short time, which is “very important for the stable management of the energy system.”
Let’s recall that last summer the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy prepared an arbitration claim against the Russian monopolist Gazprom for the suspension of gas supplies in April 2022 after Bulgaria’s refusal to pay in Russian rubles.
Earlier it was reported that Bulgaria will buy gas cheaper than Gazprom.
