Both projects called for a “humanitarian ceasefire.” The Russian project did not receive the required number of votes, and the American project was vetoed by Russia and China.
On Wednesday, October 25, the UN Security Council once again failed to adopt a resolution on the Palestinian issue. The Russian Federation and China vetoed the American draft resolution, and the Russian draft did not receive the required number of votes, Ukrinform reports.
It was noted that ten members of the Security Council voted for the American resolution, which was enough for its adoption, but Russia and China used their veto power and blocked the decision.
Only four members of the Security Council voted for the Russian project – Russia, China, Gabon and the UAE. While at least nine votes are required to pass a resolution.
Both projects call for a “humanitarian ceasefire” or “humanitarian pause” to ensure the safe delivery of aid to civilians. They also condemned the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians on October 7 and called for measures to be taken to overcome the humanitarian crisis.
The main feature of the American resolution is that it mentions the inalienable right of states to self-defense, while the Russian draft calls for the immediate cancellation of Israeli forces’ order to evacuate civilians in the southern part of Gaza.
US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the US is ready to work with all UN member states to support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General, President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken who resolve the situation.
It was earlier reported that the UN rejected a Russian resolution calling for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. The US then blocked Brazil’s resolution on a humanitarian pause in the war between Israel and Hamas.
