Poland’s likely new prime minister says his mission is to restore his country’s position in Europe and strengthen the entire European Union.
Poland’s opposition prime minister candidate Donald Tusk has promised to “restore” Warsaw’s ties with Brussels. He said this during negotiations with the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Parliament Roberta Mezola, the Polish Gazeta Wyborcza reports.
“Almost ten years ago, in my first speech as President of the European Council, I said that I came to Brussels with a strong sense of mission. I think I can repeat those words today. Today’s mission is to give back the position of my country in Europe and strengthen the entire European Union”, said Tusk.
After talking to Ursula von der Leyen, he said that “Europe is hungry for a serious dialogue and an honest relationship with Poland.”
“I spoke about this at the beginning of my speech. After yesterday’s meeting with President Andrzej Duda, I have reason for moderate optimism, if there are no surprises. Everything indicates that this cooperation will be as harmonious as possible, “the politician emphasized.
The likely leader of the Polish government also raised the topic of unblocking billions of euros frozen due to the democratic defection of the country’s previous government. We are talking about funds from the Reconstruction Fund (158.5 billion zlotys) and funds from the Cohesion Fund (350 billion zlotys).
It was previously reported that the Polish opposition has agreed to Tusk’s candidacy for the position of prime minister.
We remind you that in the elections in Poland the ruling party of Law and Justice took first place with a result of 35.38% of the votes. However, the combined results of Poland’s three opposition parties will give it a majority in the Sejm.
