Authorities in 62 regions of Russia have introduced facial recognition systems to spy on citizens, for their safety.
In Russia, the number of video cameras connected to a facial recognition system exceeds half a million. Surveillance systems for citizens have been implemented in three-quarters of Russia’s regions, and most of the cameras are in Moscow, where surveillance has become almost total, The Moscow Times reports.
This publication believes that the Russians are under total surveillance, and the TASS propaganda agency is convinced that in this way the authorities care about the safety of citizens.
Authorities in 62 regions have introduced facial recognition systems to spy on citizens, TASS writes, citing the words of the CEO of the company that developed one of these systems, NtechLab, Sergei Suchkov.
The company clarified that in 2021, the facial recognition system was used and tested in approximately five regions. Thus, within three years, the number of entities that implemented a tracking system increased 12 times.
According to Suchkov, almost half of facial recognition systems are connected to city video cameras to monitor what is happening on the streets. In addition, the systems are used in schools and universities, especially to control admission to educational institutions.
The number of video cameras across Russia connected to the facial recognition system has reached 508 thousand, according to data from the official portals of the authorities and the Ministry of Emergency Situations, analyzed by The Moscow Times. The leader in the number of such devices – 216 thousand – is Moscow, where the facial recognition system began to work in 2017, and the coverage of video surveillance has become almost total – 74% of public places and 90% of the residential sector .
It was previously reported that the Russian Federation has increased spending on monitoring citizens by 160%.
It was also reported that the occupiers are installing CCTV cameras near the railway in Crimea.
