Sejm and Senate elections, as well as voting in a referendum, began in Poland. More than 31 thousand sites were opened at 7:00 am local time on Sunday, October 15.
In total, more than 29 million Polish citizens eligible to vote could vote in the elections.
The exit poll results will be released after 9 pm, when the polling stations close. The final results are scheduled to be declared on Tuesday.
Along with the parliamentary elections, a referendum was held, in which four questions were raised:
-
sale of state property to foreigners;
-
raising the retirement age;
-
border wall between Poland and Belarus;
-
entry of illegal immigrants from the Middle East and Africa under the EU’s forced relocation mechanism.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski’s ruling United Hand and Donald Tusk’s opposition Civic Coalition are claiming victory in the election. Recent polls show the pro-government Law and Justice (PiS) party has strong support, but it may not be enough to win a mono-majority. The opposition has a chance to form a coalition with some advantage.
Let’s recall that at the beginning of October a massive opposition rally took place in Warsaw. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered for it.
