The congressman has long been a critic of American aid to Ukraine. He is also leading efforts to impeach US President Joe Biden.
Members of the US Republican Party have elected Congressman Jim Jordan as their candidate for Speaker of the House of Representatives. Bloomberg reported this on Friday, October 13.
Jordan, backed by former US President Donald Trump, defeated Georgia Rep. Austin Scott. His candidacy will be submitted to the House of Representatives for consideration.
To be elected to the position of speaker, you must receive at least 217 votes, that is, a majority.
Earlier this week, Jordan lost to House GOP Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who withdrew his candidacy when it became clear he didn’t have the votes needed to win the speakership.
Jordan is a far-right, conservative Republican and close ally of the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump.
The US House of Representatives fired Speaker Kevin McCarthy. This position is currently vacant. Republican Patrick McHenry is serving on an interim basis.
It was previously reported that Steve Scalise has become a candidate for the position of Speaker of the US House of Representatives (lower house of Congress). However, on October 13, the leader of the Republican majority in the United States House of Representatives, Stephen Scalise, announced that he was withdrawing from the race for the position of speaker after the Republicans from the lower house of Congress could not unite behind his candidacy.
Let’s remember that on October 3, the Speaker of Congress Kevin McCarthy was fired early in the United States. The process to oust McCarthy was initiated by his former party colleague, Republican Matt Gaetz. He accused the speaker of “theoretically concluding a secret agreement with the president to support Ukraine.”
Former US President Donald Trump said that if Republicans cannot reach a consensus, he will temporarily take over as speaker.
