The former German chancellor does not consider himself guilty of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. According to Merkel, diplomacy, if it fails, is not wrong.
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in her first interview since her resignation, said she “does not blame herself” for Russia launching an outright war against Ukraine. Spiegel reports.
Asked if she could have done more to prevent war in Ukraine, Merkel said:
“I don’t blame myself. It’s not possible to create a security architecture that can prevent this.”
At the same time, the ex-chancellor denied the accusation of the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, that he pursued a policy of pacification towards Russia.
“I think not. Diplomacy, if it fails, is not wrong,” Merkel said and added that without the Minsk agreements, in her opinion, the situation in Ukraine would be more critical.
The same, said the former German chancellor, applies to his decision not to support Ukraine’s 2008 NATO membership action plan.
“I don’t think I should admit that I was wrong and I won’t apologize for this (decision),” Merkel said.
We will remind, earlier Angela Merkel for the first time in a long time spoke in support of Ukraine. He said he would not give advice to the authorities, but supported the German government’s efforts to “end this barbaric war.”
